Happy [F]ather's Day + [F]reshman Year Look Back
My Papi's temperament and interests are closer to mine, so I felt closer to him than to mami when I was young (fierce mami, gentle storyteller papi ;) ) It has changed somewhat now, with mami=storyteller, though papi is not fierce. Though I realize papi's weaker points now (so he's no longer the ideal daddy of my childhood), I see his strengths clearer too and he is so much more dearer to me now.....T.T
I love you Papi and miss you T.T Can't wait to get back in August and see papi and mami's faces.
***
Freshman Year is done (if you don't count summer).
I feel like I've learnt so much this year. Much more than I've ever learnt in 9 months.
I've also been severely stressed out that I felt so much like hiding in a hole, hiding under my bed or under the table, or creep under my blanket (comforter) and sleep away the reality of the world. This happened several times when I found myself with a big scary task (assignment, paper, job application, interview etc) looming in front of me that needed to be done (very soon) but I was scared of doing.
But being so far away from home, I could no longer turn to my papi to help me finish, or copy from my classmates the next day. My task was something that only I could do, and I had to do it, whether or not I liked it. And time would pass by at its own pace, whether or not I had to turn in that paper in 24 or 10 hours later, or whether I had to walk 20 minutes to get to where I was supposed to be, or whether it was 2am in the morning and I still hadn't finished that 4 page paper...
I had to learn to take responsibility for my actions and mistakes and choices. I also learnt to be a lot more independent, to try to do things on my own first, if I can - but then I got scared to asking people for favors. I learnt to express my ideas and opinions a little more. I learnt to re-believe in dreams. I learnt to just try, try and see, see how it goes.
I also learnt many new academic knowledge, and reinforced old knowledge. I learnt to love Chemistry. I learnt to study hard for unfamiliar subjects.
I also lost some. I tend to neglect my family and friends back home.
I need to go prepare for my class tomorrow so I'll stop here for now. Sorry for the abruptness. =p

I Said To Poetry
http://www.languageisavirus.com/cgi-bin/madlibs.pl
^ Found that random poem generator while i was searching online for help in analyzing the poem I'm going to perform next Tuesday.
I took a long time deciding which poem to perform. Incidentally, 3 poems in the anthology (Literature & Its Writers, Charters & Charters) were in our Literature Component in Form 1 & Form 4 =D, i.e. The Road Not Taken (someone in my class is going to perform this), Lake Isle of Innisfree, and Sonnet 18!!! Lol.
I really like Innisfree, and while googling about it i found out that Innisfree is actually a real place in Ireland. And I heard a recording of Yeats himself reading/humming the poem [it's totally different from how I read it - much less dramatic & with a rather droning tone but with an interesting underlying rumbling beat to it. As if he was humming this little thing to himself while farming on the Lake Isle]. But I decided it was too short a poem to perform (2-4 mins).
Sonnet 18. Hahahah. Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. I still remember how Sc1 ppl imitated Ms. Wong pronouncing 'temperate'. But I think I was scared I would seem too "high flown" while performing this poem and end up mispronouncing words so I didn't choose it.
More poems. My lecturer is interested in social issues (esp. feminism) underlying literature, so I kept my eyes out for one. I also felt that it would help me be less dependent on my "dramatic" style. I am so keen on this because the 103 Handbook (our pdf 'textbook') said on pg25,
body with that of the poem, since, as an artist, the performer exists to perform the
poem. Certain "personality readers" seek instead to turn all poems into their own
bodies, and they make all poems sound pretty much alike. However profitable
commercially such personality performers may be, they are not the kind of performer
we are interested in developing. Such performers do not grow, they stagnate; as
artists they die."
Anyway, among all the poems with a political message, "War Is Kind" by Stephen Crane attracted me. It's not too long either (we have to memorize the poem we're performing o.o")
- Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind.
- Because your lover threw wild hands toward the sky
- And the affrighted steed ran on alone,
- Do not weep.
- War is kind.
Hoarse, booming drums of the regiment,
Little souls who thirst for fight,
These men were born to drill and die.
The unexplained glory flies above them,
Great is the battle-god, great, and his kingdom --
A field where a thousand corpses lie. - Do not weep, babe, for war is kind.
- Because your father tumbled in the yellow trenches,
- Raged at his breast, gulped and died,
- Do not weep.
- War is kind.
Swift blazing flag of the regiment,
Eagle with crest of red and gold,
These men were born to drill and die.
Point for them the virtue of slaughter,
Make plain to them the excellence of killing
And a field where a thousand corpses lie. - Mother whose heart hung humble as a button
- On the bright splendid shroud of your son,
- Do not weep.
- War is kind.
So I put my choices on Blackboard (online course management system) - "War is Kind" or "I Said To Poetry" - I couldn't decide which one to do.
The next day after class, one of my classmates came to me and asked about it because he wanted to perform this poem (we were both performing on the same day). Hence to make things easier for him and for me, I decided to do "I Said To Poetry".
I still do have lingering feelings for "War Is Kind", but I guess there's no turning back. Let's hope that I can pull off "I Said To Poetry" and not grow mold and die. =P

Alice Walker, 'I Said To Poetry'
I said to Poetry:"I'm finished
with you."
Having to almost die
before some weird light
comes creeping through
is no fun.
"No thank you, Creation,
no muse need apply.
I'm out for good times--
at the very least,
some painless convention."
Poetry laid back
and played dead
until this morning.
I wasn't sad or anything,
only restless.
Poetry said: "You remember
the desert, and how glad you were
that you have an eye
to see it with? You remember
that, if ever so slightly?"
I said: "I didn't hear that.
Besides, it's five o'clock in the a.m.
I'm not getting up
in the dark
to talk to you."
Poetry said: "But think about the time
you saw the moon
over that small canyon
that you liked so much better
than the grand one--and how suprised you were
that the moonlight was green
and you still had
one good eye
to see it with.
Think of that!"
"I'll join the church!" I said,
huffily, turning my face to the wall.
"I'll learn how to pray again!"
"Let me ask you," said Poetry.
"When you pray, what do you think
you'll see?"
Poetry had me.
"There's no paper
in this room," I said.
"And that new pen I bought
makes a funny noise."
"Bullshit," said Poetry.
"Bullshit," said I.
Sorry if the colored font distracted you.
I wonder what you think the poem means? And how would you perform it or how would you like to see it being performed? I'd like to know what other people think. Do tell me.
.
For some background about the "one eye", yes, the poet has only one good eye. According to The Official Alice Walker Biography, when she was young, her brothers accidentally shot her right eye with a BB gun and, not wanting to take the blame, they made up a story and persuaded her to go along. She did, and that experience had a lasting impact on her.
.
It's a really fun poem, and I hope I can pull some meaning out of it, other than the fun part.
Oh yeah I have to write a 4-5 page paper about the process of analyzing this poem. =.=" Gotta continue with my work [Gah I have a lot to do man]

More of ASB
"Maria, thanks!" O_O Erm...you got it wrong Boss...my intention was not a noble one......but i never told her x.x
And later when I saw her hair wet then I remembered why she had wanted to get up so early - to shower - then I understood why she thanked me lol.
But that's not an essential part of what I wanted to tell you guys. Anyway here's the elaborate story. On ASB trips we generally cook our own food, and everyone takes turn cooking. Me and Nathan were randomly selected as a cooking pair, and I was freaking out because I am pretty much clueless about cooking [though I can cook rice in a cooking pot and probly fry an egg and I do know the theory of stir-fry]. Nathan is a headstrong guy who has clear thoughts and when he sets out to do something, he is very determined to do it (and do it as perfectly as possible). So even though he also doesn't know much about cooking, he virtually took control of the situation by making almost all of the decisions. And me being my low-self-esteem self, the one who always gets persuaded but never manages to persuade (T-T), i felt like i was being pushed back. Yet I couldn't complain because I really don't know what to do, and how can I contribute like this? [ELS story all over again] So Nathan decided that we would be making fajita, a type of Mexican food (go google it yourself la I lazy). It's something like taco. And I agreed because I had no better ideas. When we went shopping at Kroger, everything we bought was basically decided by him (because I had no idea what fajita is or how to estimate how much people eat. I still don't know how to estimate how much ppl eat -.-"). So I was feeling...unsatisfied...because I wasn't contributing. I want to contribute! I don't want to be useless!
My Biggest Fear is: Being Useless; or more precisely, being disliked & being scolded & being thought stupid by everyone in the world. T.T i don't want that i don't want that i don't want that.
Erhem. (So I hope you now understand better why i try so hard to not offend ppl to the extent of withdrawing myself from possibly disrupting group harmony in various social situations)
Back to the story. Nathan & me were supposed to cook dinner on Thursday evening, so the night before I confided in Jenny about my worries/fears/dissatisfaction. Jenny had a clear view of the situation and frankly told me what she thought, and what i should do, in a way that was impartial to everybody. While talking to her I gradually became clear as to what I thought and what was the thing I should do. I said I don't mind doing all the manual labor (because clearly i cannot help much in the brainy department because i don't know what a fajita is lol). I said I think I will ask Nathan to let me do at least 50% of the work. I don't want him to take all the credit.
Later that night Nathan literallySHOOED everybody out of the kitchen & brought Xin Kai in. To make his top secret surprise dessert (=.=) Not even me was allowed (wth?) I was stubborn for quite some time, not wanting to get out of the kitchen, prolonging my stay by washing the dishes and pots and pans. Nathan was even more stubborn (SUPER SUPER HEADSTRONG STUBBORN O_O). In the end I still left the kitchen (because i doubt he will ever give way |||orz) but on ONE CONDITION: i will get to help him make the dessert tomorrow. I don't want him to get all the credit.
As luck would have it, Thursday evening after painting, some ppl went to Krogers to get more groceries, and Nathan went to get the salsa sauce. And I went back to the church where we were staying to get started on preparing dinner. BIG GRIN =D. I started by doing the canned refried beans. Lisa & Jenny were at hand to instruct this clueless kid. Really not much, just pouring them from the can into a pan, heat up, and stirring so they won't get burnt. (Refried beans look gross, btw).
And then I proceeded to cut the veggies (luckily Nathan told me beforehand that we were going to slice them). Shalini and Ritu and Lisa offered to help cut but I FLATLY REFUSED because I FINALLY GET THE CHANCE TO COOK and to have the chance to do ALL the work is a WONDERFUL PLEASURE and a RARE OPPORTUNITY for this spoilt overprotected xiao jie here. Yes, because at home I feel that pa & mi don't trust me to cook, and besides i'm too slow lol. Shalini kept on offering to help but i flatly said No. (Sorry Shalini. This is important to me. It's a previous learning and growing process for me. You must let me "struggle" my way out from the cocoon and learn to use my wings.
Moldy: Struggle konon. =.= )
What veggies? Bell Peppers aka Capsicum EWWWW -.-||| I don't like bell peppers x.x But they look pretty and are not too hard to cut, though Jenny and Lisa had to give me explicit instructions. I'll repeat them to you now. First wash the capsicum. Next, cut it into half. Then cut off/tear off using hands the center part (with the seeds and all). Then slice them (I did it with the capsicum's inside facing up). Try to slice them into equal sizes (widths) so that they'll be cooked evenly - this is especially important for meats! [I know this! though not the reason. From watching Chuuka Ichiban XD See? Anime is educational] So I finished slicing 1 yellow, 1 red, and 1 green capsicum all on my own! Yay!
Then I went on to the tomato. The last time i cut tomatoes (during ASB DC) it was not a pretty result X.X Now i referred to my experienced consultant cooks. It would be impossible to slice tomatoes, so the experienced cooks advised me to dice them. So I shall proceed to tell you the explicit instructions for dicing tomatoes. First wash the tomatoes. Next, cut it into half. Then slice the 1/2-tomato into slices & then dices - imagine the oval-hemisphere shaped 1/2-tomato, imagine the oval has two axes. i think it's better to slice the longer axis first, and then make 4 more parallel slices. then only turn it 90 degrees clockwise/anticlockwise, to slice the shorter axis and make 4 more slices parallel to the shorter axis, and you will have diced 1/2 a tomato! Do the same with the other 1/2. [Hope people are getting what i'm trying to say lol. But most people won't need that much advice about dicing tomatoes gua haha]
Before I finished dicing all 6 tomatoes, Nathan had come back. He & others sliced (I let him slice =P) the two onions while i finished up the tomatoes because I had sliced onions at home before =] Then we went on to the chickens. I think it was 3 pounds of chicken breasts. Nathan took out the fatty parts of the chicken breasts and passed them on to me for me to slice. Again, my best-est ["best-est" is not a word] consultant cooks advised me along the way. I think I did a pretty good job ^_~ Because of time shortage, Ritu and Lisa helped us to slice the chickens too (yeah i finally allowed outside help lol).
Then follow the instructions of Kroger (generic) brand Fajita pre-made seasoning mix [The Secret of the Taste]. I cannot remember already X.X We used 2 packets. I think we seasoned the chicken before cooking (by mixing the powder with the chicken in a salad bowl). Nathan did that while i began...
...stir fry~! I was so happy when I found out that we were going to do stir fry because it's something I know more about! And with Lisa the experienced cook consultant by my side, I fear not! I can't remember exactly the procedure, but it should go like: 1. Pour some oil into pan/wok. 2. put the onions. 3. i can't rmb whether to put the chicken or capsicum first. i think it was chicken, bcoz there was a lot of capsicum and it would've been hard to stir fry chicken properly. 4. Stir fry the chicken by letting them sit in the wok for some time to cook (a minute or two? I don't know- just followed when Lisa said), and then stir/turn them around, upside down, then let them sit again, and then stir again. Repeat until chicken is cooked (I'm still not sure how to know, i guess when chicken looks cooked- brownish? Put in some water too. (I dunno how much and I dunno when - we actually put in too soon) 5. put in capsicum, stir fry (dun need to let them sit) 6. put in tomatoes, stir fry briefly, and Ta-Da, DONE! Yay~
